Avionics careers can range from a software engineer who specializes in the embedded software that is used within a cockpit or in a control tower to an aeronautical or aerospace engineer who helps design the planes, missiles, helicopters, space shuttles or satellites. Avionics careers focus closely on the programs used within these aircraft or spacecrafts for flight and monitoring purposes.
Software engineering is a popular choice among those seeking avionics careers. There are two ways to go with software engineering. One may choose to be the specialist who installs and upgrades the software into the computerized systems within a spacecraft or aircraft, or one may be one of the team of specialists who designs and creates the software used by pilots. Developing software can be harder work, but the larger pay scale makes it worthwhile.
Another choice in avionics careers is an avionics technician. Their job requires working alongside the engineers to install software and equipment into the cockpits. Usually, technicians in this avionics careers field are required to fill out the paperwork and help with maintenance as required. Avionics technicians may not require a college education, but courses in advanced math and certification/licensing may be required. For those unable to attend a college program, usually an apprenticeship may be a great way to start the career, if you are able to find an employer who offers apprenticeships.
