One of the best ways to become an avionics technician is by entering the Coast Guard. Throw out all you've learned about the Coast Guard being the weakest form of the military, rivalries you may have heard mean little in the real world. The U.S. Coast Guard offers exceptional avionics technician programs in which men and women can match their military career with training to become an avionics technician. Pay scales are high and the ocean setting provides an amazing way to spend a few years.
Avionics technician professionals have a main goal of inspecting and repairing avionics equipment in airplanes, helicopters, space shuttles and other aircraft. Once a man or woman joins the Coast Guard, there are a number of fields they can enlist into for career training. An avionics technician is trained specifically in the field of electricals. They receive an in-depth education that trains them to install, perform maintenance on, and inspect all of the aircraft's on-board computers (avionics) systems. These avionics technician specialists learn about AC/DC power sources, airframe systems, electrical controls, instrument panels, on board computers, and more.
Before a person can even enter into the avionics technician programs, they must have proven skills in algebra, basic math, geometry, psychics, and trigonometry. People with these skills usually make it into the avionics technician program without any problems. Additionally, candidates must pass security clearance to become accepted into the military. The Coast Guard requires all members to be at least seventeen years old, be a U.S. Citizen or hold a green card, have a high school diploma (GED's are only accepted in special circumstances), complete a medical exam, and pass an aptitude test. Furthermore, those wanting to become avionics technician students must be comfortable on and around water because the Coast Guard trainees spend many hours on the ocean.
